TOPS ’86

Tomorrow’s People Society : STC High School Batch 1986

A PRIMER ON THE TOMORROW’S PEOPLE SOCIETY (TOPS)

What is TOPS?

TOPS is an acronym of the Tomorrow's People Society, organization of the 1986 Saint Theresa College High School graduates. It must be noted however, that high school graduates of the same year and school do not necessarily enjoy automatic membership. An interested graduate has to undergo the prescribed procedural processes before the formal granting of full pledge membership.

Its Purpose and Vision

The said organization was primarily constituted to uphold unity and cohesiveness among the graduates. In order to provide a more comprehensive presentation, it is imperative to know the Preamble of the organization's constitution:

“We, the 1986 high school graduates of of Saint Theresa College, Tandag, Surigao del Sur, imploring the aid of the Divine Providence, desirous to establish a just, united, democratic and God-fearing organization, to develop cooperation, rapport and social consciousness in the ranks of the youth sector, to advance our educational, social, cultural, moral, physical and spiritual well being through collective efforts in the spirit of unity, justice, liberty, and equality, do ordain and promulgate this Constitution.”

The above-mentioned Preamble may seem too wordy, but its framers had one thing in mind: An explicit presentation of the indispensable stipulations so as to give emphasis on the direction of which the organization is intended.

The Preamble indicates that the organization is aimed at molding a distinct, responsible, disciplined and well rounded member of the society, social conciousness is also a primary concern since the organization is placed within a system of societal adversities. The organization does not tolerate permissiveness and indifference. Any issue which directly or indirectly affect the community must be given due attention. This organization is not concentrated on picnics and lavish parties, as many may seem to believe, but its members spend much time in launching worthwhile and valuable activities which are of primary importance to the younger sector of the society.

How far has it gone?

In line with all the organization's objectives, the Tomorrow's People Society has already sponsored the Annual Spelling Bee contest since 1987. From then on, the said contest is now deemed as a tradition in STC every semestral break. This is obviously an educational program which is aimed at developing the student's word power and spelling ability.

Physical development is also a priority. In May, 1988, the organization sent its cagers to the hard court during the summer basketball encounter and placed fourth (4th) over all plus a special award - Best in Uniform.

During graduation rites in STC, the organization has been giving the Extra Curricular Excellence Award since March 1987. The award is presented to that high school graduate who has an exemplary performance in terms of extra curricular activities.

Since every one in the organization is in school, activities are trimmed down hence it only surfaces out during vacation.

How Long Will It Last?

The organization will continue to exist for as long as there is commitment among the members. It is intended to last for a lifetime. It believes that its destiny can only be determined by the degree of conviction that grows in it.
